“The Republican led-House voted 54-43 to pass the bill. It now goes to the GOP-controlled Senate, where its prospects are uncertain. The legislation would ban abortions after the first detectable fetal heartbeat, which can occur as early as six weeks into pregnancy.”—
Oh man. So like any dude want to fight with me about feminism right now? Or maybe you want to defend certain pop culture icons and their misogyny? Or say “I’m pro-choice, but well I voted Republican because of the budget and fiscal issues, because those are the moral issues facing our country”? Or maybe “yeah but was she drunk”? Or like the dude I fought with the other day, ya wanna tell me “maternity leave isn’t really a right”?
Oh oh! Why don’t you tell me I should chill out and not take it so seriously? That uh no, no one will take away my right to an abortion! DUH. Silly woman!
DO YOU? Because if you’d like to fight right now, I’m feeling it. Because it’s shit like this that proves that holy shit, there is a war on women and children! And to deny it and offer platitudes about well “I vote Republican but none of the people I voted for are trying to pass those bills. No they’re trying to fix this damn economy.” Well FUCK THAT, noise. You’re either with us (feminists) or against us and I’m tired of the half-assery.
I just got a surprise lump of dough in my PayPal, and I just wanted to take a moment to thank everyone who supports me through iTunes, Zune store, Amazon MP3, Napster, and other services in addition to physical sales and bandcamp.com.
It means so much to me that you make a point of paying me for my art, when it’s so easy to not bother. I’m not mad at anyone who hasn’t got the loot to spare, but those of you who do are SO generous to do so.
Thank you all so much. It couldn’t come at a better time.
I want to give you all something nice in return. Is there anything you’d like from me?
I’m taking suggestions from fans as of right now - what free thing would you like me to create and make available for everyone this summer? I’ll see what I can do.
Reply as a comment here, or e-mail email@example.com or DM @rljd on Twitter or uh… facebook… wall post. Whatever.
I guess because of RibFest and the Ottawa Jazz Festival, there’s a lot more foot traffic downtown than usual.
I guess because of that, the anti-choice demonstrators who harrass women and passers-by in front of the Ottawa Morgentaler clinic have ramped up their presence.
The dude pictured above is often pacing the territory, whether there’s a larger gathering or not. He just hates women that much.
I can feel my heart squeezing blood harder when I see these creeps in action. I see stars. I just want to MAKE. THEM. STOP. I go through scenarios in my head without meaning to - shouting them down, damaging their signs, just hauling off and slugging somebody. I don’t like the idea of hurting anyone, but it feels like a war, and they’re so cruel and vicious to people who have done nothing to them or anyone. I can’t handle it.
Today, I tried to wrest a sign declaring abortion a Holocaust from that man’s hands. I just saw him from down the street while I was returning to work from my lunch break, and I was already seeing red from seeing him earlier and I just ran up and grabbed the sign and yanked.
I didn’t get it away. He looked affronted; offended, like what could my problem possibly be, and said, “Hey, hey, hey now!” Before I knew it, I was surrounded by a swarm of young men also holding signs. I feel like I saw the same face and hair over and over again.
I hollered at them. I can’t remember all of what I said, just like “You have to STOP this!! It’s harrassment what you do!” and “Go HOME!” I don’t think I swore but I don’t care if I did.
After only a few brief seconds during which no-one touched anyone, the security guard for the building that contains the clinic got my attention. He was seated on a bench, in the beautiful sunlight, maxing out… he scarcely raised his voice to say, “Let them go,” to me.
I let go of the sign and jabbed my index finger toward his third eye. ”YOU should stop them!” I roared at him, “You should be ASHAMED of yourself for not stopping them!”
With that I let go and rushed back to work. I know all I did was feed their idea that they’re a noble, persecuted resistance to an oppressive status quo, but FUCK them. I will stop them somehow. I will put a stop to this. They have to stop. They have to stop hurting people.
Here is a new collaboration between Kool A.D., Pictureplane, Ceschi Ramos and Sole. The song is called “Coke Rap” and will be available on Sole’s upcoming mixtape Nuclear Winter Vol. 2. Check out Sole’s website for more information on this mixtape and his upcoming album.
“You don’t want to start setting up another rule book, like: “This is how you’re a feminist. And this is the way you dress. And this is the way you act. And this is the way you protest.” It’s like, some people protest carrying signs. Some people protest by making activist radical music. Sometimes people try to just make it through a day and not kill themselves, and that’s their activism for right then, because that’s all they have.”—Kathleen Hanna (via charlottetheharlot)
Kathleen Hanna is one of those people where any time you hear about anything she’s doing or ever done, or even if she just opens her mouth, you are so so grateful she exists.
I think she could be talking about ANYTHING, like cookies or animals or space travel or country music, and every word she came out with would make me feel like FINALLY SOMEONE IS SAYING THIS!!
BECAUSE us girls crave records and books and fanzines that speak to US that WE feel included in and can understand in our own ways.
BECAUSE we wanna make it easier for girls to see/hear each other’s work so that we can share strategies and criticize-applaud each other.
BECAUSE we must take over the means of production in order to create our own moanings.
BECAUSE viewing our work as being connected to our girlfriends-politics-real lives is essential if we are gonna figure out how we are doing impacts, reflects, perpetuates, or DISRUPTS the status quo.
BECAUSE we recognize fantasies of Instant Macho Gun Revolution as impractical lies meant to keep us simply dreaming instead of becoming our dreams AND THUS seek to create revolution in our own lives every single day by envisioning and creating alternatives to the bullshit christian capitalist way of doing things.
BECAUSE we want and need to encourage and be encouraged in the face of all our own insecurities, in the face of beergutboyrock that tells us we can’t play our instruments, in the face of “authorities” who say our bands/zines/etc are the worst in the US and
BECAUSE we don’t wanna assimilate to someone else’s (boy) standards of what is or isn’t.
BECAUSE we are unwilling to falter under claims that we are reactionary “reverse sexists” AND NOT THE TRUEPUNKROCKSOULCRUSADERS THAT WE KNOW we really are.
BECAUSE we know that life is much more than physical survival and are patently aware that the punk rock “you can do anything” idea is crucial to the coming angry grrrl rock revolution which seeks to save the psychic and cultural lives of girls and women everywhere, according to their own terms, not ours.
BECAUSE we are interested in creating non-heirarchical ways of being AND making music, friends, and scenes based on communication + understanding, instead of competition + good/bad categorizations.
BECAUSE doing/reading/seeing/hearing cool things that validate and challenge us can help us gain the strength and sense of community that we need in order to figure out how bullshit like racism, able-bodieism, ageism, speciesism, classism, thinism, sexism, anti-semitism and heterosexism figures in our own lives.
BECAUSE we see fostering and supporting girl scenes and girl artists of all kinds as integral to this process.
BECAUSE we hate capitalism in all its forms and see our main goal as sharing information and staying alive, instead of making profits of being cool according to traditional standards.
BECAUSE we are angry at a society that tells us Girl = Dumb, Girl = Bad, Girl = Weak.
BECAUSE we are unwilling to let our real and valid anger be diffused and/or turned against us via the internalization of sexism as witnessed in girl/girl jealousism and self defeating girltype behaviors.
BECAUSE I believe with my wholeheartmindbody that girls constitute a revolutionary soul force that can, and will change the world for real.
“The world is not full of Attractive People and Unattractive People. It’s full of people who are attractive to some and not to others. I hear from trolls all the time who complain that they don’t want to be “forced” to find nasty, ugly fat women attractive–which utterly baffles me, since the last thing I want to do is encourage fat-hating dicks to date fat women. You don’t find fat people attractive? Fabulous. Don’t date them. I will find a way to pick myself up and move on without your love. But to assume your lack of sexual interest in fat chicks must be universal–or that the mere existence of self-confident fat people having healthy relationships somehow “forces” you to find fat attractive–is the height of fucking narcissism.”—
