In this song, “Gopher Guts,” Aesop Rock tells a series of different small animals things that are admirable about their character, and things that are bright about their futures, in between verses that contain criticisms of his own behaviours.
Even though the putative objects of these words are pretend animals, the words are perhaps the most caring things I’ve ever heard expressed in rap lyrics.
And gives me ENORMOUS FEELINGS.
I love Aesop Rock.
I do not love violent entertainment.
I think this video is artfully made.
I was wrong about Chekhov’s gun, and it was more like Kubrick’s hatchet.
Anyway if you’re like me and you wince at people even getting paper cuts or skinned elbows, maybe just bump this with your eyes closed?
But I mean also it’s GOOD. And it has the same amount of YouTube views in 24 hours that my first video got in the last five years, haha.

My review of this joint?
I’M BOUT TO BEAST OUT !!
Genuine independent rap legend [G.I.R.L.] Jesse Dangerously has been on the internet since 1994, which means since juuuust before rap diversified into sometimes being terrible in addition to amazing.
It has turned his attention span to soft mush, and here is where you will reap the benefits.
You may like what appears in this space if you like feminism, hip-hop, brilliance, pith, and humility - all of which he has in spades.
